FAQ - 💬

❓ Can you save a plant with Southern blight?

👉 Soil Treatment. Treating the soil with heat (including solarization), fungicides or fumigants, cultural manipulations, organic amendments, fertilizers, or biological treatments may help to control southern blight.

❓ How do you get rid of Southern blight?

👉 Fungicides containing azoles (e.g., propiconazole, tebuconazole), fludioxonil, flutolanil, mancozeb, PCNB, strobilurins (e.g., azoxystrobin, fluoxastrobin), thiophanate-methyl, and triadimefon are all labeled for Southern blight control, but may have varying levels of effectiveness.

❓ How do you treat blight stems?

👉 The most common method is the use of fungicides as a stem blight treatment. Dusts or sprays of fungicides useful for preventing and combating powdery or downy mildew have been shown to be effective against gummy stem blight disease.

❓ Can Southern blight spread to other plants?

👉 It often colonizes these materials before attacking live plants. However, the pathogen can spread more easily to neighboring plants when the soil is not mulched. The disease occurs most often from late spring through early fall when the weather is hot and humid.

❓ How long does blight stay in soil?

👉 Fighting Blight Blight spores can survive in the soil for three or four years. Only plant tomatoes in the same bed every three to four years, and remove and burn tomato refuse in the fall.

❓ What plants are affected by Southern blight?

👉 Disease development: Southern blight is especially destructive on crops such as tomato, beans, peas and peanuts. Many other plants including annual ornamentals are also susceptible. The fungus develops rapidly during hot weather when temperatures are over 85°F.

❓ How do you get rid of Southern blight on hostas?

👉

  1. Remove diseased plants as soon as they are noticed. Plants can be buried, but do NOT place them in your compost pile.
  2. Excavate surrounding soil. Dig out and replace the soil to a depth of 8 inches and 6 inches beyond the diseased area.
  3. Solarize the soil. ...
  4. Provide better drainage. ...
  5. Sterilize all tools. ...
  6. Try fungicides.

❓ How do you control southern blight on tomatoes?

👉 Control. Southern blight is difficult to control when conditions favor the disease and when numbers of sclerotia in the soil are high. Crop rotation with a non-susceptible grass crop such as corn is the most effective means of reducing numbers of sclerotia and resulting indicidence of southern blight.

❓ What causes stem blight?

👉 Pathogen. Pod and stem blight is caused by the fungus Diaporthe phaseolorumsojae and Phomopsis spp. The fungus overwinters in infested crop debris and in infected seed. In early summer perithecia are produced which give rise to ascospores for initial infections.

❓ What is the best fungicide for gummy stem blight?

👉 Contact fungicides effective against gummy stem blight include chlorothalonil (Bravo®, Echo®, Equus®) and mancozeb (Dithane®, Manzate®, Penncozeb®). Effective systemic fungicides include Folicur®/Monsoon®, Inspire Super®, and Switch®.

❓ Can I plant in soil that had blight?

👉 You can plant your tomatoes and potatoes in the same spot you did last year and you shouldn't have any late blight problems as long as you cleaned up plant debris well. However, it is certainly good practice to rotate the crops in your garden as much as possible.

❓ Where does Southern Blight occur?

👉 Southern blight occurs in all temperate, tropical and subtropical regions with hot summers and plentiful rainfall. Unlike some other diseases that result in lower stem and crown rots, this one is more prevalent in well drained soils. Herbaceous plants are more susceptible to this disease than woody plants.

❓ What is the difference between Southern Blight and root rot?

👉 Southern blight, southern wilt, southern stem rot and southern root rot all refer to the same disease. It is caused by the soil borne fungus Sclerotium rolfsii. The disease attacks a wide range of vegetable crops and ornamental plants at or below the soil line.

❓ What crops are most affected by Southern Blight?

👉 Disease development: Southern blight is especially destructive on crops such as tomato, beans, peas and peanuts. Many other plants including annual ornamentals are also susceptible.

❓ What causes southern blight on Tomatoes?

👉 Southern blight is caused by the soil-borne fungus Athelia rolfsii (= Sclerotium rolfsii ). On tomato and pepper, the most common symptom occurs on the lower stem where it is in contact with the soil.
